Day in and day out millions of people are adjusted worldwide and most for a back (pain) related issues although the potential for wellness rests within the spine. The spine is literally our backbone and there is no getting around the fact that without it we cannot exist. The spinal column consists of 26 spinal bones called vertebrae with a space divider between called a disc allowing 31 pairs of spinal nerves to exit between each bone traveling throughout the body, 70% are functional nerves while 20% are sensory (pain). Spinal nerves are an extension from the brain, the spinal cord
Seems reasonable to have some healthcare provider monitoring the movement of these vertebrae and being assured any pressure bearing on these nerves are minimal at best. Chiropractors call this pressure a subluxation.
The chiropractic adjustment is what we do and common sense along with healthy daily habits including exercisestretchingnutritionergonomicssafe and effective sportstress management and general wellness habits of daily living applied throughout our cycle of life will keep subluxations at bay as well as reduce pressure to these delicate functional nerves preserving wellness. Always made sense to me
During my 47 years of active practice, I've adjusted thousands of patients and witnessed miraculous results. This is not to say that chiropractic has all the answers, no healthcare team member does, but when we work together, you, our patients, benefit the most. This brings me, finally, to the topic of the day .. Back Pain.
There are so many factors related to back pain besides sprained ligaments, strained musclesover stretched jointssport/auto injuries or work related repetitive activities as simple as desk workprolonged standing or manual labor all under the umbrella of ergonomicsAuto immune conditions play a role such as fibromyalgiachronic neurological diseases that create havoc as well as muscle weakness and weight issues placing tension where less should be more and more often when more should be less. Stress as well often aggravates the back
So, let's explore the back and see what we can do to assist it as we only have one. The beauty of the spinal column and the spinal cord is how it works as a whole, with a well functioning nervous systemEach area supports the one above and below and when mobility is at its peak performance spinal nerves are flowing without interference and adjunctive soft tissue such as ligamentsmusclesdiscs, synovial fluids bursae and vascular tissue are doing what they were intended to do: protect, allow mobility, nourish and lubricate, a well oiled machine.
The Spinal Column consists of four segments: cervicalthoraciclumbar and sacrum with the pelvis as an anchor. The purpose of the spinal column is to support the body, as well as protect the spinal nerves, mentioned above. Let's take a closer look
The Cervical Spine .. Neck:
The cervical spine, right below the skull, consists of seven vertebrae which are the smallest bones of the spine and most vulnerable to injury. The fact that the skull weighs about 11 pounds and the head movement often violent and repetitive, the supporting muscles and ligaments play a huge role. Stretching help Click below for a few

The Thoracic Spine .. Mid Back
The middle back, vertebrae between the shoulder, protect the celiac plexus, which are a group of nerves flowing to the digestive system. The upper portion flows to the heart and lungs and the ribs allow breathing, so it is a vital spinal region and since we use arms for a multitude of activities, the area is vulnerable to physical tension and subluxations. Stretching this area for proper mobility is the way to go. Click below for a few

The Lumbar Spine .. Low Back
The lower back consists of five vertebrae and are the largest bones of the spine. Wear and tear as we age is the culprit creating chronic pain as well as reduced function. Unfortunately for many, lower back pain is the most common reason people reach out to a healthcare provider with a myriad of symptoms most notably disc disordersleg pain and numbness. Proactive activities such as stretching, exercise, ergonomic and mindfulness throughout the cycle of life helps prevent eventual surgeryClick below for a few stretch exercises that will help as well as activities such as walkingswimming and stress management.
