Doctor, You Need Some Time Off

I hope you had a healthy and happy Thanksgiving. This holiday finds all businesses either closed or booming with retail sales. But doc, when was the last time you took real time off, closed the office, gave your staff a break and refreshed besides the typical holiday? If I asked how many, many would say they were too busy, lacked the time or funds. But really, taking a vacation or just dedicated time off is not a luxury but in our day and age a necessity.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on your years of chiropractic service, community wellness and most important teaching and healing those that passed your threshold. If your goal was to reach others with your chiropractic story and you thrived and supported your staff and family with fruitful compensation be thankful and share your blessings with those that made it happen. But many of us may be overwhelmed, distraught with uncertainty and within or near burn out, they will be thankful if they read and heed this message so be sure to share it with others that may be in need

I met recently an Atlanta chiropractor who created a temp agency for chiropractors looking to vacation while leaving their office open or a doctor needing last minute help as well as those desiring to work as a cover doctor on a temporary or replacement basis. One rational reason to avoid closing the office would be finding a competent replacement doctor, even for a week, let alone for a personal crisis that may need extended service.

Years ago, I fell and broke my arm, which was a game changer. I thought a week or two would suffice but I was unable to even activate an Activator and immediately was out for four months and a replacement doctor was crucial. I was fortunate to find a fantastic, loving and empathetic chiropractor who practiced similar to me and most important my staff and patients loved. The practice thrived and never lost a beat. Message: a temp agency is a great idea. If your city doesn't have a temp agency, you may wish to contact the doctor who created this Atlanta website: info@bmca-chiropractors.com

So doctor, prior to a crisis like I experienced, a health issue, personal burn out or some needed family time, take a few days off. A week to refresh, regenerate and most important dust off the stress that professional life entails. Yes, a destination weekend seminar is a smart start but a seven day cruise, a bus tour of Europe or traveling through Yosemite may be just what you need to clear your head, body and soul.

Money may be tight which may limit your plans but even a dedicated hour a day to meditate, chill or quietly relax may be a stimulant to prod your brain to pause from the hectic day. If money is tight, plan a weekend away from the office with a drive to a pleasant location to "smell the roses," chill, reflect and relax. But, if funds are not an issue, plan today for a weeklong vacation with family and/or friends away from patients, staff, insurance hurdles and the professional grind that practice life offers. It's not too hard to determine where to go as much as deciding you need to go.

If you have problems determining where and when to travel, costs and benefits as well as a mode such as a cruise, bus tours, resorts, special venues, and excursions then ask around or use my travel advisor, who has traveled the world at high-end venues, discovering delicious meals and sites, knows his way around deals and plans with you a restful, eventful, exciting and/or adventurous journey. He has my highest endorsement.

As mentioned earlier, vacations were luxuries but today is a necessity. So many places to visit. So many ways to spend money but the fun is in the trying. So many reasons to say tomorrow rather than plan today and so many reasons to put aside the desire only to resent it later for not following through. This only piles on the stress with another missed opportunity and only adds to business mistakes, complacency, staff resentment and missed patients not to mention the toll on family and friends.
