Getting New Patients Is Like Plucking Fruit From A Tree

Many years ago, as a student of Life College hustling for new clinic patients, I needed to acquire a liquor license to be hired as a server in a local restaurant. This required fingerprints and some vetting at the Marietta police station. Not sure what prompted this but while completing the forms, I asked the officer if there was a police academy within the station and lo and behold, there was.

I quickly thought outside the box and asked if I can speak to the supervisor for the academy and within a few minutes Lt. Higgins came down beginning my journey reaching out for new patients via community talks, ergonomic orientations, workstation evaluations as well as postural screenings and health fairs.

I asked Lt. Higgins if anyone provided spinal safety and wellness classes to their recruits and he said no. I told him I was a student at the chiropractic college and one of our requirements was to introduce spinal health and safety to our community and I would love to provide this service to his academy. He agreed and the rest is history.

While still a student, I realized that acquiring patients when I graduated would require the same initiative. they were out there; I just had to meet and greet which began my journey creating marketing and community/in-office patient talks.

He scheduled a class and with a fellow student, we spoke to about 20 recruits. As I was ready to wrap up the class, I told the students that Life College had a public clinic and every new clinic patient had to attend their new patient orientation prior to treatment but those attending our class today would be exempt. So, if they were interested in a spinal evaluation and chiropractic care at the school to write their name and contact information for me to present to the school. Of the twenty students, about 15 were on the list.

To make a long story short, I did not have clinic permission to offer this promotion but fortunately the clinic director reluctantly agreed, but just for this one time. I gave the list to the front desk and within a week, I had a vibrant patient clinic with extra providing new patients to my fellow students.

So why do I say new patients are like plucking fruit from a tree? Well, about a week later I went to the phone company to pay my bill. no on-line payments then and asked the clerk if anyone was providing safety and stress classes and she directed me to someone who scheduled a talk for me as well. I had plenty of new clinic patients and upon graduation, I followed the same recipe.

One day I asked a patient where she worked and she told me around the corner at AT&T where they rented two large buildings. Was anyone providing similar classes there, not that she was aware of but the next day her supervisor called and asked what I had in mind. He thought it was a great idea and asked if I could speak to 300 people and I asked him if it was possible for smaller groups followed by postural screenings and he took it from there scheduling multiple classes over a number of weeks and provided a room for screenings with the help of some Life students. Within a few weeks I doubled my practice.

Over the following years, I continued with numerous corporate ergonomic evaluations and workshops, nutrition, senior, stress management and wellness classes within my office and throughout Atlanta. Some were successful others not but unless you extend your reach plucking fruit from trees will never happen. Start by in-office lunch and learns or evening wellness classes. Patients will bring guests and then ask where they work or pray and find their social or human resources scheduler and soon you too will be Plucking New Patients From Trees
I realize that this approach is not for everyone and takes time and staff but if you are interested in the logistics and a need for slides, reply back to me at: joel3639@aol.com
