Bird Dog Patients

One of our most prestigious chiropractic consultants was Dr. Pete Fernandez. One of his suggestions was to focus attention on the patients that appreciate your chiropractic work and goals and will readily refer and network for you with some prodding. He called them Bird Dog Patients. These best friends focused on their task and retrieved the prize.

One of our college presidents and a creative chiropractor is Guy Riekeman, who tell the story of Steve Martin, the actor/comedian, when he got started would visit college campuses and put on a show. In one of his skits, he would bring out his banjo and wore a head band that looked like he had an arrow through his head. The students laughed and then he would start singing gibberish and soon asked everyone to join in the song which created more laughter. There were no words to follow.  Well, let's get serious.

If you want to create a bird dog patient(s) or have patients follow their care schedule and refer others, then they have to know the words to your chiropractic song. No gibberish, no gimmicks just the truth of what you do, why you do it, how it affects their life and also the life of those they play and pray with. Provide homework for them like stretches, call them after their first visit, educate them each visit knee to knee and use timely surveys to see how they are doing and who they may know who would also benefit from your chiropractic care. Be sure your staff is on board and will to join in your journey towards success. A doctor doing half of this will shine and stand out within their community and patients will tell others. Does this make sense?

Doctor there is no magic for success. Some doctors are satisfied with their status quo while others draw energy always striving and growing. Some may follow online and seminar chiropractic consultants that promise riches and high patient volume and guess what, they will succeed if they work the program. Some doctors follow scripts with rigid patient protocols and they too succeed because they bought into the system while other doctors draw their success by following sound patient management. Their success is their Cause and Effect.

First step is to establish a plan of action. Determine the resources within your demographics. Clerical, Labor, Retail and Residential. If you have the potential to reach folks within any of these four areas the fun is the planting the seeds of health and wellness with your chiropractic care, cultivate and harvest. I leave it to you to reach out to your community whether through patient contacts, drawing from social media, meet and greet professional neighbors such as municipal workers, attorneys, healthcare providers, local social clubs, church and sport venues. Your reach is as long as your vision and hunger to succeed.

A bird dog patient has been educated and felt the positive effects of your quality chiropractic care. They will seek others that would also benefit with your care and armed with the chiropractic story bring your prize to the office. If you find time for in-office classes they will bring potential new patients and if you ask, they will tell others. Our purpose, besides the adjustment, is to tell the chiropractic story so they can share it to others.
