Finding New Patients is Like Plucking Fruit From a Tree
Years ago as a fledging chiropractic student trying to hustle new patients for my student clinic, I concluded there were enough potential people out there but getting to meet and greet them was the trick. Eventually as an established doctor with a successful practice, my time was limited for marketing although maintaining the practice momentum required a plan.
There are many successful clinics out there some with multiple offices and doctors, a variety of techniques and therapies but all have to be savvy to stay afloat, pay the bills and thrive. Business is business and those with the gift to close the deal, have patients follow their recommendations, pay cash as they go along or with a specific contract for healing and best feel obligated to spread the good news and refer others will succeed for sure. Getting new patients is a given, keeping them and having them bring others is the game. So, what’s the plan?
A rudderless ship will drift sailing in circles, although a captain guided by charts reach their destination safely. So, set goals, not too lofty at first, now create action steps to reach the goal and be sure to share this with your staff and patients. If you want a strong patient base with potential referrals and networking where they work and congregate, you must put some energy into it. If too busy or your comfort level is low, then hire someone or have a staff member do these steps. Create a patient orientation class in the office or a class for a workplace.
Make your office fun, there is no hokiness on the rungs up the ladder towards success. Acknowledge patient birthdays and milestones, feature a patient of the month that has followed their schedule or referred in the most new patients or whatever and gather positive testimonials (be sure they sign a waiver .. permission to use it) and share it on Facebook, Instagram and throughout the world of social media. If you are located in a small town word spreads so use digital and print media to tell your story, sponsor health fairs and be involved in community activities.
Use holidays to decorate your office and use the holiday theme and spirit to indirectly enlighten your patients and community that we offer health and wellness while others hang around sickness and disease. Be the beacon that shines throughout your community, the place of healing and wellness that attracts others and be sure your front desk CA is the kind, considerate, compassionate and non-robotic person that would welcome you as the new patient’s first impression is on the phone and it is almost impossible to make an excellent first impression a second time.
Always strive to provide excellent service both you as a clinician as well as your staff. Be sure to have timely staff meetings, discuss issues and have everyone discuss a solution, have compassion to those patients cooperating but financially unable to maintain their schedule, make it happen and delegate the above activities to those that can be accountable to get it done.
