Words To Our Song   I was speaking to a Life student the other day describing how best to communicate with our patients and community. Present and potential patients usually learn about our product by word of mouth, our direct advertising or indirect exposure through various avenues. Gathering the masses is one thing but keeping them involved and referring others takes nurturing and persistence. Let’s consider one step that leads to success.    With every new purchase such as a computer, vehicle or household appliance our degree of knowledge adds to the bounty of your experience. Some search Youtube or Google to read or view simplified versions of user manuals to jumpstart the experience or enhance it a bit more. Same for patients. If an ailment plagues them they usually visit Dr. Google, the all-knowing search engine with explanations from ADHD to the Zika virus. The more they explore, the wiser decisions are made toward treatment options and may even the playing field between illness and solution.   Chiropractors desiring to assist their patients during their journey towards wellness must teach their patients the words of their chiropractic Health and Wellness song.   Chiropractic is a mystery to most. In fact, during your next professional meeting canvas a number of doctors and staff and ask for a simplified explanation of chiropractic and be ready to be surprised at the number of confusing and conflicting answers. Yes, instinctively we may know what to do but the essence of why, how and when may vastly differ based on where you studied and how much material you retained and use now. This should not surprise us since we use the intrinsic nature of the body to heal and placing it under a microscope cannot be done.   We observe the marvel of healing with increased quality of life via our crude approach towards wellness finding it difficult to explain via a scientific hypothesis. In fact, without introducing harsh chemicals or extracting structure or organ, as our allopathic friends do using their inductive reasoning, we find our patients heal via releasing the flow of life, the essence of deductive reasoning, allowing the hole to be whole again.   An adjustment is a means to an end, manipulating away fixations allowing increased performance and less pain.  Some take out their slide rule and measure using mathematical equations to alter x-ray images or correct a curve here and there. Their explanation and rationale for long term care is spinal or postural correction making an educated attempt to create change. For a patient to follow your lead, follow your treatment plan and happily pay for the experience takes nuance and a clear explanation of why, how and when .. in other words, the words to your chiropractic song.    I leave this discussion with a time long ago, when Steve Martin, actor and comedian, was performing the college circuit. He would have an arrow through his head (a band over his head with the arrow on the sides) but to the audience it looked like it pierced through his skull. He carried a banjo and began singing gibberish and the audience laughed but everyone laughed harder when he asked everyone to join in with the song. There were no words to his song, no lyrics for people to leave with and tell others to join in and no lasting impression other than a fool with a banjo, an arrow through his head and singing nothing.    Doctor, do you want to grow your practice from within and without, if yes, start today to gather the words, create the tune and go out with the words to your song. Like the Pied Piper they will follow once they have reason to follow your lead. Patients need to simply understand your version of chiropractic, your purpose and goals and their responsibility towards Health and Wellness. They need to understand with no doubt the purpose of the adjustment, what they should expect and what you expect from them. They need to appreciate their Cycle of Life from Infant to the Golden Age and see the pitfalls towards wear and tear and how destructive and insidious a Subluxation is. Oh, catch how many versions of that word you will find canvasing others.    There is no magic towards practice growth and sustenance just a basic desire to communicate.  As your words get stronger and more meaningful, it will transcend to others and they will follow. Patient compliance will be stronger and referrals will be nothing but a second thought.   Oh, be sure your staff know your words to the song for sure!!!   Want a Health and Happy Practice ..
