Working With An Attorney
These past weeks, I focused on creating Community and Professional Alliances as well as using social media. Since Awareness = Success it behooves us to be sure that within our community every aspect of life can be tap into and on our radar. Today, I will go over Meeting and Greeting the Personal Injury Attorney
If there are vehicles there will be accidents and if there are accidents there will be PI attorneys, lots of them. As I touched base two weeks ago, personal injury work is not for everybody, but it can be lucrative and it surely helps those patients that need our care. So, you might as well reach out to your attorney community.
Marketing is time consuming and if not managed correctly can financially be either a money pit or a bucket of cash earned. So, let's cut to the chase and review how you can, even in a small town, create awareness within the legal world out there.

What Is A Whiplash
As chiropractors, we have treated numerous patients with whiplash injuries. Although most are the result of an auto accident, some are due to quick and repetitive neck movement related to work or sports. But, unfortunately, most people involved in even a minor collision make light of any injury and seek no attention hoping that within time pain and spasms will reside. By the way, they usually do, but too often the natural mending of mild and moderate muscle and ligament tears take longer to heal and often over time never heal properly creating arthritic joint change, tension and degeneration. Ultimately, joint mobility is compromised adding to further wear and tear. Sports orthopedics has proven that movement after some joint surgeries or injury helps healing and helps to avoid long term affects related to the wear and tear and degeneration. Chiropractic care offers the movement recommended to avoid future adhesions and joint instability.
We know this but does your attorney community know you do? Do the paralegals working with these attorneys know you, how best to refer to you and most important understand the mechanics of a whiplash, the role of chiropractic and importance of their client/your patient compliance. Also, are you willing and knowledgeable enough to offer and invite them for a free In Your Office Soft Tissue Workshop which includes their paralegals as well? If the answer is yes, the first step is to have your marketing team gather the names of PI attorneys and their paralegals within a ten mile draw area using old fashion yellow pages and digital resources etc.
Create an introductory letter outlining your experience with PI work, any specific credentials, ramification of a soft tissue injury, your chiropractic approach and referring surrounding cities. Be sure to note who you called and when doing so write names of the PI attorneys and their paralegals as well as their e-mail addresses. If you are able to speak with someone, ask them if their firm accepts new personal injury clients since you wish to refer to them. If they say yes, great, introduce yourself and your office, location and if they can send you a few cards, etc. Next, discuss your soft tissue workshop, some dates and if they or their paralegal would like to attend. Be sure, to outline that the information would be beneficial to their staff as they will be knowledgeable of client compliance and why. Of course, they have no idea what you will offer, so be sure to have some available dates and e-mail or fax them an invitation.
You may wonder why an attorney would attend your IN-Office Workshop, well the answer is simple. Many attorneys are not as knowledgeable about soft tissue injuries as they would like and would love to jump into the PI game. Furthermore, the staff member usually responsible for client compliance, hand holding and referrals is the paralegal. Their attendance is most important.
Again, I can go over this at length but space is limited. Suffice to say that this marketing project takes time but once implemented and follow through, the long term residuals will pay off handsomely. Not all PI law firms are huge, most are Mom and Pop operations and they too want a piece of the pie.

During the class, as well as sending monthly e-newsletters to them, similar to what I am writing today, be sure to provide information concerning soft tissue injuries, chiropractic solutions, need for patient/client compliance and whatever you feel appropriate. In other words, your on-going informercials reveals your PI knowledge and within time referrals will be pouring in. I can provide these newsletters if interested
Chiropractic care excels and should always be considered after whiplash, as we focus on paraspinal balance and structure not just your level of pain which a visit to an Urgent Care Facility of the Emergency Room offers. Medication works to reduce pain but often masks the underlying instability. Like you, when I review an x-ray with a new patient, I often ask if they were ever involved in an auto collision after seeing DDD or Degenerative Disk Disease .. spinal joint arthritis. This spinal joint degeneration creates tension and instability and need for therapeutic care
Whiplash injuries can create lifelong pain. In fact, recent whiplash statistics demonstrate that more than 50% of victims progress to some degree of chronic pain. In fact, a concussion, even mild, may have occurred which is often difficult to diagnose and treat. Chiropractic care is geared to manage this and if a patient doesn't respond within a reasonable time, a referral to the proper specialist should be made.
Whiplash injuries can occur even at 5 mph, as this video proves, actually injuries occur at speeds below 12 mph. In an auto accident, whiplash injuries are exacerbated when the headrest is too far away or not set correctly. Headrests should be adjusted to be 2 inches from the head, but 98% are set too far way. The attorney knowledgeable of soft tissue damage will understand the cycle of healing and encourage their client to comply to care.
An experienced PI attorney knows all this but most don't and for sure their paralegals don't. A doctor is foremost a teacher, so let start teaching. Be sure to conclude every workshop with a closing message including the relevance of the class, how they can refer to you and locations close to your office
