E-mail message this week .. It Takes Time

Yesterday, I met my daughter's nephew Jacob, a Kent State student with a year to go before graduating at Life University's Life Leadership Weekend.  What a great idea to immerse potential students with the gift of chiropractic, the vision of Health and Wellness and what the school has to offer. I graduated in 1978 when Life was a one building campus moving room dividers to enlarge space as the school grew. Looking back I now appreciate the time spent making it happen, the time it took to establish a business, watch it grow and nurture it along the way.

If you are like me, time often gets the better of you with projects still pending, patient management compromised and feeling rushed even with lots of time available.

As chiropractors, we work under many hats; doctor, teacher, employer, community advocate, health coach, friend and confidant to many of our patients. These responsibilities deem our full attention and being busy is never an excuse.

For example, are you slow completing office notes, patient reports, attorney narratives and public relations and marketing ideas due to time restraints. Do you skip a beat with patient education because you sense there is not enough time in the day. Do you neglect scheduled staff meetings or even knee to knee discussions to read the pulse of the office, respond to staff concerns or handle yours. Many doctors never have scheduled meetings and go with the flow only to find time later when a crisis has to be managed.

Listen, I get it, there is no specific formula for every doctor and every office. Patient volume is not the only barometer of practice health and many doctors are happy with their practice flow, their work routine and financial prowess. Fine, but if you can do better, see more patients, manage your staff with more efficiency and reap the financial rewards and what it offers without compromising your psyche or time would that be a consideration?  If time and personal energy is an issue, you may consider an associate or independent contractor to help you help others.

As chiropractors, we must always find time to update our technique and bob and weave with the nuances of our profession. Did you plan to attend a technique seminar, state or national convention or on-line seminars this year, well it too will take time but the end result will be well worth it. Once you feel confidant with your new technique and take time to educate your patients they will hopefully, in turn, do the same to their family and friends. Exponentially, the time it took to take the seminar, hone the technique and discuss this with your patients will pay off handsomely. There is always enough time.

We chiropractors are a unique breed. Like salmon, we swim against the current, always educating, convincing and cajoling our patients and community of our worth. We are biomechanical experts stressing performance and function while trying to keep the cost of real healthcare within reach.

Listen, be busy, be very busy building your success fostering health and wellness within your patients and community, forming professional alliances with local corporations, health advocates and community leaders while you maintain that ever expanding office with perfect staff, patient and practice management.  It all takes time
