Chiropractic Education and Profession
The chiropractic story began in 1895, born in the USA when D.D. Palmer provided the first adjustment in Davenport, Iowa. His son, B.J Palmer felt there was a relationship between the spine and wellness and established the chiropractic profession that continually evolves. Today there are chiropractic college throughout the world with 22 throughout the USA

Palmer College was the first chiropractic college called the Fountainhead, in Davenport, Iowa. As chiropractic grew, schools were established worldwide creating a postgraduate program culminating with a DC degreeDoctor of ChiropracticThe steps necessary to become a chiropractor begins with a pre-med/chiropractic education followed with entering a post graduate program within a credited chiropractic college.
The first two years of chiropractic school is similar to medical school focused on anatomy and function followed with two additional years learning to incorporate and relate the past two years to the spine and the human body as well as the physical aspects of healthcare.
Chiropractic is a hands on profession using manipulation, called the adjustment, as our primary tool toward wellness. As previous e-newsletters have illustrated, there are 26 spinal bones separated by a disc providing space for the 31 pairs of spinal nerves to exit freely innervating the cells, systems and organs of the body. The most important system is the nervous system which controls and coordinates all human function and without proper nerve supply the body would not function well.
In the medical world there are specialties that focus on the nervous system. Neurologist test and determine how and why the nervous system functions and the neurosurgeons and orthopedists specializing on the spine that help reduce pressure to this vital system with surgery. Their hands on tool are physical therapists who conservatively help manage the joints throughout the body. A vital tool for sure.

The chiropractic profession is more focused on the spine and adjacent joints while being proactive in the prevention of neurological and physical stress prior to a crisis requiring radical treatments such as surgery or long term medication. Reduced spinal nerve pressure with chiropractic care and physical lifestyle changes such as proper exercise and stretching may prevent the need for radical procedures. Many chiropractors offer nutritional advice that also enhances functional wellness. Chiropractic care has so much more to offer than pain relief.
Dr. Margolies Story Towards a Career in Chiropractic
So, what brought me to chiropractic and what challenges and rewards have I experienced in my 47 years of practice, graduating from Life College of Chiropractic in 1978, the largest chiropractic school in the world, right here in Marietta?
Well, it's a convoluted story starting when I was a young pup suffering from digestive issues that worsened as I got older, back pain was not an issue. I tolerated it finding it intolerable when I was in the army forcing me to use their medical facilities for pharmaceutical relief and after extensive evaluations and treatment followed with post service medical care the only long-term relief was with a chiropractor.
My digestive issues remained during my years as a professional orchestral musician but after learning about chiropractic and anatomy and being treated by a chiropractor as well as nutritional and lifestyle changes my symptoms abated which prompted me to search more, eventually leaving the musical world for chiropractic.
The rewards of helping thousands of patients have far outweighed the challenges. I always found that with each challenge there were more rewards. I guess the most challenging aspect for me is the lack of chiropractic understanding within every community. Yes, chiropractic has answers for pain relief but the functional and health and wellness benefits are a mystery to most.  I met this challenge by creating and offering in-office Health and Wellness classes for our patients, Wellness classes in churches and schools as well as Safety and Ergonomic Workshops throughout corporate Atlanta.
The rewards have been first and foremost meeting and helping so many of you, our patients, their family and friends. I called my office the Family Chiropractic Center and we catered to patients from cradle to just before grave.

My adjustments, rehabilitative procedures and specific nutritional advice helped so many that medical attention did not address, as it did me. We live within a myriad of emotional, environmental and physical stress that common health issues such as allergies, arthritis, digestive, headaches and joint pain could be managed and helped greatly with a series of chiropractic care, rehabilitation, specific nutritional advice and diet changes along with timely maintenance chiropractic care to keep the spine in line.
I welcome your referrals of family and friends as well any questions you have about chiropractic and any thoughts concerning chiropractic education and a profession, just ask.
I am proud that I influenced six patients to consider Life College of Chiropractic and after their graduation entered my honored profession and I hope I can influence more.
