I was helping one of our e-newsletter doctors with their practice issues created my staff upheaval and financial stress. The doctor was slowly losing their confidence and emotional instability was taking root. Unfortunately, if practice finances are not managed, personal financial stress is not uncommon.  Within time, practice issues develop into a cascading avalanche with little issues turning into a boulder that unheeded result in practice failure and personal drama.
A practice is a living organism that must always be attended to and like a patient evaluated regularly and treated accordingly to avoid a crisis. Many practice consultants provide data forms that when completed and regularly evaluated provide the pulse of a practice in real time allowing the consulting team to offer advice or additional training, including staff
In Other Words, Accountability
Considering the money we spent on our chiropractic education, many of us seem to learn more as we go along and attend a seminar here or there and if you are the wise and attentive doctor, you listened, you learned, you implemented and you thrived, you were accountable to yourself.

You can be trusted to treat your staff with respect or weed out those less attentive than the rest. You can be trusted to account for every penny spent on equipment and be assured it is used as part of your money stream. You can be trusted to share with your staff your practice goals providing them a sense of accomplishment when met and award them as a true team member and you can also be trusted to manage your practice and personal life avoiding the emotional rollercoaster that becomes a beast

So what advice did I offer this doctor reaching out for help. First, assess where they are and where they were and if possible when the slide took place. If I were a hypnotist, I would search for the time stamp that foreshadowed the missteps and try to turn things around, but this was not on the table. Instead, look for simple answers such as why and when the staff issues became an issue. When did the doctor lose control of staff accountability and lose control of their practice. Often, a poorly trained staff member carries with them doubt and to control their existence in the office finds routine to be the norm setting in motion complacency. A doctor going along with this has a difficult time making changes and then relents to live with this norm making it difficult to push their practice further without pushback
Second, what was done and can they do it better. A slip and slide practice is a chronic headache. It may start as a general headache but before long, the ache is no longer general but specific and hangs around too long and aches badly. Cluster issues become more than staff, it translates to lost patient visits, lost income and lost confidence in your work. This is a migraine.
There is a desire for change but before your turn it around, you must stop the bleed. Take a moment and review the practice, consider missed appointment and lost patients (can you account for this), reduced or lost drive to attract new patients (do you have any public relations or marketing program in place), lost income due to less volume or missed services and consider lost enthusiasm for your work resulting in less or no referrals and patient compliance. In other words, did you lose control of your practice
In other words, is the doctor ready to make changes starting with themselves. Usually, the biggest obstacle to forward movement is the person you see in the mirror .. you! So, Be the Lion Within.
I can go on and write forever but consider that change is difficult especially if you lack the tools to make it happen. I recommend any doctor hoping for change, hoping to return to the better days and wishing upon a star that they were back in control to reach out to successful colleagues or spend a few bucks with a practice consultant or attend a weekend seminar like Parker, state or district associations or continuing educational programs year round to recharge your chiropractic battery and listen, learn and implement when returning to the office Monday morning. Also, review your staff for complacency and schedule timely staff meeting, even if it is you and one CA, so you can share concerns, find solutions before the tsunami of dread sucks you again down the abyss

By The Way: Health and Wellness also require accountability. As Chiropractors we manage structural stress and often assist with adjunctive programs including nutrition, rehabilitation and often act as a bartender or taxi driver helping with a personal and/or emotional crisis that tag along. I have found that a referral to a Health Coach has helped many patients attempting to change their life around with weight, chronic health issues etc. We can do so much in the office but a patient needing hand holding and guidance will benefit greatly from a coach. I recommend www.leahgwellness.com She is compassionate, empathetic and knowledgeable.  Sessions are remote so patients worldwide can benefit.
