Managing Chronic Pain

A common ailment that patients visit their doctors, including us, is chronic pain. The billion dollar over the counter and pharmaceutical industry has created useful compounds for various ailments and pain along with medical specialties such as physiatry or pain management, physical therapy for rehabilitative procedures and primary care providers who refer their patients for advanced imaging such as an MRI and or an orthopedic specialist.

Pain is a pain and depending on the area can be quite debilitating especially if unrelenting and limits your life.

There is no magic bullet for pain relief although management tends to be best. Acute pain stems from a recent incident whether a trauma, sport injury or over exertion and usually eases after a few days. Chronic pain in lingering and without management can be overwhelming.

Management begins with awareness, health goals and if lucky the source or the origin of the pain can be known and either a lifestyle change is tweaked or specific treatment or therapy is in order.

In today's world, many enlightened or those searching beyond the traditional medical approach are reaching out to complementary alternative "holistic" answers for pain management as well as functional issues that burden the body by setting goals with douable action steps.

These include, meditation, gentle movement with Tai Chi, supplemental formulas, manual therapies as well as physical hands on such as physical therapy, reflexology, acupuncture and body mechanics like Rolfing, Alexander method and more.
