Breathe Life Into Your Practice
As a brass musician, I learned long ago that breath control was a crucial component of a clear and beautiful tone. If you played a brass or woodwind instrument you probably started your early days with long tones or holding the note. The purpose was to control the sound, keeping it steady, in tune and not wavering. Breathing exercises and breathing techniques help.
These monotonous sessions are usually the difference between the confident musician and the one that is at the mercy of the moment. As with all endeavors, establishing best habits early result in lasting success. For that best performance, ability to adapt and change while on stage all begins with breath control.
Okay, how does this apply to the chiropractic practice? Well, have you been frustrated with the growth of your practice it's time to breathe life into it. Satisfied with your practice, why not expand your professional lungs and grow some more.  Without breathing there is no life and without control it makes life much harder.

While practicing this week it dawned on me that warm up exercises, like stretching, prepares for the challenges ahead. Not a revelation, but an affirmation that focused practice makes the technical challenges less so.
How focused are you on your practice? Do you keep statistics, maintain staff and patient compliance, tweak or radically change as needed and have moments within your workday to breathe and focus? Like the long tones I mentioned above, daily affirmations focused on goals with action steps will place you on the right path. Sharing goals with your staff provides the accountability necessary to keep you on that path. Simple but necessary professional habits is the breath needed for success.
So, I challenge you to learn to meditate or find private time to contemplate the path you are on and determine if too many tributaries keep you chasing your tail rather than moving straight ahead.
As chiropractors, we have the obligation to turn lives around. Our patients usually turn to us with pain while those more educated take advantage of the wellness benefits with adjustments and lifestyle changes. If we are not focused, breathing life into our own life and practice how powerful will you be.
The choice is simple, we are already in the office, might as well be ready to ask for referrals, create in-office excitement with ethical promotions, holiday events and educational programs that patients can attend and bring guests as well as community health fairs. This is a well oiled practice.
