Code Changes as well as the new ABN form   E-mail message this week .. Continuing Education   State board regulations require we acquire yearly CE hours geared to enhance our knowledge and keep us updated in the nuances of our trade. To fulfill this need our professional colleges, state associations and vendors provide specific class hours dedicated to x-ray, diagnostic testing and techniques from A to Z. This past weekend Life University offered classes one of which discussed some insurance treatment code changes as well as the new Medicare ABN form going into effect October 14. I’m sure many of you reading this may be unaware of some changes such as the common code M54.5 (low back pain) which is no longer valid as of October 1, best change this to M54.51 (low back pain vertebrogenic in nature). To get more information the chiropractor teaching the class offered some free guidance that you can take advantage of at the conclusion of this message.   I look at the average practice having a cross section of society as patients. If yours is like mine, there is a blend of children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. Every aspect of a community; every phase within this lifecycle offers us an opportunity to tap into their level of wellness while enhancing their performance and enforcing through patient and community continuing education how best to maintain it. This should be the chiropractic credo, our mission statement, our purpose and goal to provide the education and skills to create this within our community. It’s great to learn the latest technique or which test or therapeutic device will relieve spasms and pain but prevention and the tools to get the message across is as important.   As a former professional musician, I realized that with the paycheck came responsibility. I knew that the pros next to me were very competent and with each practice session or rehearsal they strived to get better. So it is with us. With our diploma came responsibility. I accept that the doctor’s competence level improves with each adjustment and that increased skills can be attained by seminars and discussions with friends. The successful doctor is aware of their community lifecycle and how best to apply their art to the community need from ergonomic, nutrition, stress awareness from newborn to the golden years. We have lots to offer.   Bridging the technical of chiropractic with a proactive focus on lifecycle activities is as important as the adjustment and will endear us to our community way into the future.    What more honorable role do we need   Have a Great Day   Dr. M   Code Changes as well as the new ABN form:   Dr. Jeffrey Lewin did an outstanding job teaching Risk Management at the Life CE weekend and during the class discussed some of the code changes as well as the new Medicare ABN Medicare.
