In the USA we spend a day each year remembering our military veterans and the sacrifices they and their family made to keep our country safe and secure. As a military veteran myself, I appreciate the three years I spent both here and abroad serving my country. So, besides taking advantage of holiday sales, take a moment giving thanks to a veteran and be aware of veteran concerns such as homelessness, suicides and healthcare. We must work as a family to assist each other and those that served us in uniform should have our priority attention.

As a veteran within our proud chiropractic profession, 43 year’s worth, I also appreciate the change chiropractic has made over the years. Back in 1978 when I graduated from Life College, third class, most states had a chiropractic law, Medicare was not in existence and insurance parity between the medical and chiropractic world was way off. Our state associations fought for every crumb to increase state law to legally allow chiropractors to refer for an MRI, offer nutrition, utilize therapies and maintain our distinct art and science of the adjustment as our domain without the encroachment of other allied healthcare professions. Here in Georgia, at least in my early and formative years, this was a yearly burden requiring strong and vibrant state association political action committees with a lobbyist vigilant of legislation not in our favor and keeping the medics away from our small turf. So, if you are not a member of your state association please join and especially contribute to their political action committee, as this is funding to protect your interest and livelihood

Here is some sage veteran advice:

I am reaching retirement after all these years creating a successful career and most important a carefree financial future. When I taught an ethics class at Life from 1996 to 1999, which really was a class on how to start a successful practice, many of you may still have my Smart Start textbook (maybe found in the Life library) during the last week of classes I discussed saving for your retirement. For the students, not even in practice, the thought to save a few bucks each week towards retirement was crazy, but after all these years of practice, accumulating money, investing well and not having to rely on Social Security when I finally close my chapter as a DC, reduces stress for sure. You may know of colleagues who like to spend and not save, even an IRA, hoping that when they reach their maturity as a chiropractor it will all work out. Let’s hope so, but saving early, profiting and accumulating is the best approach for a sleep well at night future. Sage advice, save, stay out of debt, invest in your business and go with the flow.
